Lessons from the Legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most sacred and spiritually uplifting days in the Islamic calendar. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” This period is not only marked by the performance of Hajj—the fifth pillar of Islam—but it also offers an incredible opportunity for all Muslims, whether on pilgrimage or not, to draw closer to Allah through acts of worship and reflection.

For those not undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage, these days are a gift from Allah—an open invitation to engage deeply in acts of devotion. Prayer, fasting, charity, and the recitation of the Qur’an are especially encouraged. Fasting on the Day of Arafah (the 9th of Dhul Hijjah) in particular is a powerful practice, as it expiates the sins of the past and coming year.

A helpful way to stay spiritually motivated during this time is by following a structured plan. Organizations such as Yaqeen Institute offer excellent checklists and resources to help you make the most of each day. These tools can keep you focused and help track your progress in worship and good deeds.

But beyond the rituals and outward acts, the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) offers a deeper well of reflection and guidance. His life forms the foundation of many of the rituals of Hajj, and his unwavering faith continues to serve as a powerful model for Muslims today.

Patience in the Face of Trials
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) displayed remarkable patience throughout his life. From the tension with his own father to the rejection by his society, he remained steadfast and respectful. Many new Muslims—or those striving to revive their faith—can relate to this feeling of isolation or misunderstanding, especially from loved ones. Ibrahim’s example reminds us that patience, coupled with kindness, can be a powerful form of da’wah (inviting others to Islam).

In times of personal hardship, it’s essential to be patient with Allah’s plan. Whether you’re waiting for a change in your circumstances or struggling to strengthen your relationship with Allah, know that patience is part of the process. Like Ibrahim (AS), continue to trust in Allah’s wisdom and remain consistent in your efforts.

The Power of Sacrifice
One of the most well-known aspects of Ibrahim’s (AS) life is his willingness to sacrifice for the sake of Allah—most famously, his willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS), upon Allah’s command. This ultimate act of obedience is commemorated annually through the practice of Qurbani (sacrifice) during Eid al-Adha.

Yet, the story of sacrifice runs deeper. Ibrahim (AS) also sacrificed his reputation, his homeland, and his personal comfort for his belief in the oneness of Allah. Many Muslims today, especially those who are new to the faith, may face similar sacrifices—leaving behind harmful habits, distancing from incompatible social circles, or experiencing estrangement from family. These sacrifices are not easy, but they bring a person closer to Allah and mirror the journey of a beloved prophet.

Hope Anchored in Trust
Despite his hardships, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) never lost hope. His certainty in Allah’s plan remained firm, even when he was alone or uncertain of what lay ahead. That sense of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) is vital for every believer, especially in moments of doubt or difficulty.

Let this sacred time be one where you build that trust. Have hope in Allah’s mercy and in His plan for your life. Whatever your background, whatever mistakes you’ve made, know that Allah is always ready to forgive and uplift you.

A Call to Action
These first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are not just a time of religious routine—they are a chance for transformation. Take advantage of this blessed window to renew your intentions, reflect on the life of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and commit to spiritual growth. Even small, consistent acts of worship done sincerely can carry immense weight during these days.

Be patient. Make sacrifices. Hold on to hope. Like Prophet Ibrahim (AS), trust that Allah sees your efforts and will guide you through every hardship.

May these ten days bring you closer to Allah and fill your heart with faith, peace, and purpose.
