Prison Support Program

Muslim chaplains are spiritual caregivers and representatives of our beautiful deen. WVMA helps provide not just financial help through donations to the program, but in the sustainability of prison support through education, advocacy, and collegiality to support this blessed cause and the care of those we have the opportunity to serve.

Description of the volunteer opportunities:

  • Please see above mentioned pdf for more details –
  • On your own time (weekdays, weekends, during visiting hours mentioned in the pdf), you can visit the IPs (as per your planned weekly meetings – 1:1 IPs’ meeting list shared by Br. Mohammad Shabbir with all volunteers on Thursday mornings).  Each Volunteers list of IPs is a working copy and shared on a Google Drive with each Volunteer.
  • Besides 1:1 meeting with IPs, we lead Friday prayer in Main Jail on three different floors, starting at 1pm until 3pm. A weekly rotation is setup between a couple of Volunteers to help with the Friday Prayer leading.  New Volunteers are always welcome to be part of that rotation.
  • For Santa Cruz county and Santa Clara Juvenile Halls, it is only cleared and allowed for 2 Volunteers currently.  More to be requested in future.  The clearance process is a bit tedious and lengthy for these facilities.

How to become a Volunteer Chaplain:

  • Please see above mentioned pdf for more details –
  • It is a simple 3-step process:
  • Provide your full name and email to Br. Mohammad Shabbir email at [email protected]
  • Fill a provided form to get your 1-month temporary county clearance
  • Plan, contact and shadow Br. Shabbir (volunteer brothers) or Sister Fareeda (volunteer sisters), and visit correctional facilities

Note: Once you are comfortable with the initial visits then you can apply 2-year clearance process.
